The Long-lasting Benefits of KUMON

Little did I realize when I first found KUMON 17 years ago for my son, Jamie, that the benefits he would gain from it would last longer than just passing 4th grade math.

While we were in Big White, Canada on our annual family ski vacation my daughter, Sara, was writing essays for her admissions to graduate schools.  One of her essays discussed the crisis in math in American public schools, particularly with girls.  She described how KUMON study has helped her to not only develop a strong math brain-which has helped her to excel in her majors in finance and economics in college-but even more importantly, to have the confidence to pursue careers in these fields.  She discussed how KUMON helped her as a young girl in elementary and middle school to build the foundation in math that allowed her to work in advanced math classes in high school and college.

My son, Jamie, my very first KUMON student, helped Sara edit her essays.  I was amazed at how he was able to improve on what I thought was already a strong essay.  We talked about his writing skills.  He was not a particularly strong writer in high school and I was always searching for writing programs for him, in addition to the KUMON Reading program.  I asked him how he developed his strong writing skills.  He attributed it to reading.  Jamie has become a voracious reader over the years, and he believes that this, more than anything else, has helped him to improve his writing.

Many parents often ask us if we know of any programs to help their children with writing.  Jamie is a good example of how the KUMON reading program-which helps students develop strong reading comprehension as well as master the conventions of language-along with a commitment to reading every day- has helped him to become an outstanding writer.

As a KUMON mom who has struggled mightily over the years to keep my own kids on track with KUMON, it was so satisfying to see how those years of KUMON study are paying off now for Sara, who graduates summa cum laude in May with double majors in finance and economics, and Jamie, who is in his 2nd year of law school at Harvard.  Even more satisfying is to know that they both credit much of their academic success to the years of KUMON study they had as kids.

KUMON has been a great investment for my children.  I truly believe that all of my students have the same potential for success through KUMON study.
